# Build donations into your product

> Your product creates the donations, your users pick the charity, and Charitips pays the charity and issues the tax receipt.

## How Charitips works

Your product decides when a donation happens and how much it is. The person it concerns picks the charity. Charitips pays the charity and issues the tax receipt.

### The three parties

- **Your product**: The website, app or platform that offers donations. It has a Charitips account, sets the rules of each donation program, and creates a donation each time something happens: an order, a referral, a month of subscription.
- **Your users**: The people your product serves, such as customers, employees, members or cardholders. Most often they pick the charity. In some flows they also pay all or part of the donation with their own money.
- **Charitips**: Keeps the catalog of charities, bills the donations, transfers the funds to the charities, issues the tax receipts and tells your product when something changes. The charities keep their own profiles up to date.

If you sell to businesses that each run their own giving, a fourth level appears: each business customer gets its own account under yours. See [Account hierarchy](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/account-hierarchy.md).

### The path of a donation

1. **You set the rules, once.** You pick the charities to offer (a charities selection) and create a campaign: its duration, its budget if it has one, how receipts are issued. You activate the campaign, and from then on it accepts donations.
2. **Something happens in your product.** Your server creates a donation on the campaign, with its amount.
3. **Someone picks the charity.** The donation is claimed for one charity of the selection, by your user or by your product.
4. **Charitips bills it.** Donations on a campaign without a fixed budget go on a monthly invoice. A fixed budget is usually invoiced in full when the campaign is activated.
5. **Charitips pays the charity.** Once the invoice is paid, the funds are transferred to the charity and the donation is marked as processed.
6. **Charitips issues the tax receipt.** To whoever funded the donation.

The details of each step, and the states a donation goes through, are in [Donation lifecycle](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/donation-lifecycle.md) and [Campaigns](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/campaigns.md).

### Who pays

- **Your company**: The usual case: a donation per order, referral, loyalty points or share of a subscription.
- **Your users, with their own money**: They pay in a Charitips widget or in your checkout, and the receipt is in their name. See [Your users give their own money](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/b2c.md).
- **Both**: Your user gives, your company adds to it. See [Donation matching](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/donation-matching.md).
- **Your business customers**: Each one is invoiced directly, or you are invoiced for all of them and bill them yourself. See [Donations for your business customers](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/account-hierarchy.md).

### Who picks the charity

You pick the list: your own selection of charities, or a selection Charitips keeps up to date for you, such as all charities or only certified ones. See [Charities and selections](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/charities.md).

- Your user, on your page or in a Charitips widget you embed.
- Your user, from an email Charitips sends for you.
- Your users vote, and a shared budget is split according to the votes.
- Your product, which claims the donation for a charity directly.

If nobody picks, nothing is lost: at its expiry date, the donation goes to one of the selection's charities that has received the least so far. On an open-ended campaign, the expiry date is two months after the donation was created, unless the campaign sets another period, up to one year.

### Tax receipts

Charitips issues the tax receipt (fiscal receipt in the API) to whoever funded the donation.

- **Your company funds the donations**: The receipt goes to your company: in France, a 60 % tax reduction within the legal caps, for charities that issue receipts.
- **Your users pay with their own money**: The receipt is in their name, if they give their name and postal address: in France, a 66 % tax reduction, 75 % for some charities. Needs the B2C use case.
- **You run giving for business customers**: Receipts go to you or to each customer, depending on the use case.

By default, receipts are grouped once a year. A campaign can instead issue them when it closes. Not every charity can issue a receipt: its `fiscalReceiptsSupport` says whether it can. See [Billing and fiscal receipts](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/billing-and-receipts.md).

### Content to share

Charitips also generates content to share the good deed on social networks: images of a donation, PDF documents and card designs, built from your campaign. See [The gift card](https://www.charitips.com/docs/overview/gift-card.md).

### Sandbox and live

Two separate environments: on the sandbox, test credentials and test payments, and no real money moves; on live, donations are real and billed. Nothing crosses from one to the other, and the account rules are the same on both, including the active subscription a campaign needs. See [Sandbox](https://www.charitips.com/docs/get-started/sandbox.md) and the [go-live checklist](https://www.charitips.com/docs/get-started/go-live.md).

### What you can build

A few ideas, each linked to the use case that builds it:

- **E-commerce cashback**: Above a given basket amount, give a set amount and let your customer pick the charity. An alternative to a discount. See [A donation with every order](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/donation-per-order.md).
- **Fintech**: Promote card payments with a charity cashback, or reward income domiciliation or a savings product with a share of the average balance. See [Card cashback as a donation](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/card-cashback.md) and [Round-up on every payment](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/round-up.md).
- **SaaS**: Give a small share of each subscription to a charity your customer picks. See [A share of each subscription](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/subscription-share.md).
- **Insurtech**: Give a share of the unused contributions to charities your policyholders pick. See [A share of each subscription](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/subscription-share.md).
- **Referral**: Thank a customer who brings a friend with a donation to the charity of their choice. See [A donation for every referral](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/referral.md).
- **Periodic give-away**: Every month, quarter or year, give part of your profits to charities your customers pick. See [Customers vote on a budget](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/vote-on-a-budget.md) and [A campaign for a date](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/campaign-for-a-date.md).
- **Gift cards**: Give the balance of expired cards to charities, or let cardholders donate what they will not spend. See [Unused gift card balance](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases/gift-card-balance.md).

Every use case, with a demo you can click through, is in [What you can build](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases.md). If yours is not there, or you need help, [contact us](https://www.charitips.com/contact).

### What it costs

Prices are on the [pricing page](https://www.charitips.com/api). What each flow needs from your account and your plan is in [Plans and prerequisites](https://www.charitips.com/docs/overview/plans.md).

### Go further

- [Plans and prerequisites](https://www.charitips.com/docs/overview/plans.md): What each flow needs before it works, from a validated account to the plan features some flows require, with the error you get when one is missing.
- [Glossary](https://www.charitips.com/docs/overview/glossary.md): The words used across the Charitips docs, from campaign and claim to child account and fiscal receipt, each in one line with a link to learn more.
- [FAQ](https://www.charitips.com/docs/overview/faq.md): Business questions about Charitips: what it costs, when you are billed, who gets the tax receipt, what happens to unclaimed donations, and what data you share.

> Charitips is a donation API: your product creates donations, your users choose the charity, Charitips transfers the donation to the charity and issues the fiscal receipt. Build and test on the sandbox, https://api.sandbox.charitips.com, with credentials that start with `test_`.

## When to use Charitips

Use the Charitips API when a product turns something its users do into a donation to a charity they choose: an order, a subscription, loyalty points, a referral, a gift card balance or a card payment. Charitips holds the catalog of charities, pays them, and issues the receipts.

Do not use it as a payment form for donors. The donations your product creates are billed to your Charitips account, and your product decides how they are funded.

To pick a flow, read [What you can build](https://www.charitips.com/docs/use-cases.md): every use case with who pays, what starts the donation, its calls, its webhooks, what the account needs, the other scenarios it covers, and the build spec of its demo. If the product serves businesses that each run their own giving, read [Account hierarchy](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/account-hierarchy.md) before writing code. How campaigns, donations, billing and receipts behave is in [Concepts](https://www.charitips.com/docs/concepts/llms.txt).

Then make [Your first donation](https://www.charitips.com/docs/get-started/first-donation.md), on the sandbox. To build with a coding agent, install [the skill](https://www.charitips.com/docs/skill.md), or connect [the read-only docs MCP server](https://www.charitips.com/docs/get-started/mcp.md) at `https://www.charitips.com/docs/mcp`. The OpenAPI document, with the errors each endpoint returns, is [openapi.json](https://www.charitips.com/docs/openapi.json).
